The Future of Isoprene Research

چکیده

This is the year of celebration of the 80th birthday of Academician Guivi Sanadze, the discoverer of isoprene emission from plants. Since the initial discovery, work in his laboratory has laid the foundation of our current understanding of many important aspects of isoprene emission. Among the most important are: the very large temperature sensitivity of isoprene emission from plants, its dependence on light, and its close association with photosynthesis. In this opinion paper I shall describe major understandings that have come about in the forty years of research since the discovery of isoprene emission, several current controversies and my opinions about them, and most importantly, the future for isoprene research. © 2009 Bull. Transcriptional Response of Structural and Regulatory Genes Involved in Isoprene Biosynthesis and its Relation to Essential Oil Biosynthesis in Response to Salicylic Acid and Abscisic Acid in Mentha piperita L.

Background: In peppermint, precursors for the biosynthesis of monoterpenes are provided by plastidial methyl-erythritol-phosphate (MEP) pathways. Objective: In order to increase our understanding of terpene metabolism in M. piperita, the effect of salicylic acid (SA) and abscisic acid (ABA) in the modulation of expression pattern of genes involved in essential oil biosynthesis and secretion wa...

The CO2 inhibition of terrestrial isoprene emission significantly affects future ozone projections

Simulations of future tropospheric composition often include substantial increases in biogenic isoprene emissions arising from the Arrhenius-like leaf emission response and warmer surface temperatures, and from enhanced vegetation productivity in response to temperature and atmospheric CO2 concentration. However, a number of recent laboratory and field data have suggested a direct inhibition of...

Do Oaks With a Provenance Related to Warmer Climates Emit More Isoprene?

The hydrocarbon isoprene plays an important role in atmospheric chemistry, particularly in regards to air pollution and climate change. It is important to know why certain plant species emit isoprene and what factors affect its production in order to predict future air quality. Past research has indicated that isoprene aids in coping with heat stress, so it was hypothesized that source latitude...

A review of Secondary Organic Aerosol (SOA) formation from isoprene

Recent field and laboratory evidence indicates that the oxidation of isoprene, (2-methyl-1,3-butadiene, C5H8) forms secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Global biogenic emissions of isoprene (600 Tg yr−1) are sufficiently large that the formation of SOA in even small yields results in substantial production of atmospheric particulate matter, likely having implications for air quality and climate. H...

Elevated [CO2] magnifies isoprene emissions under heat and improves thermal resistance in hybrid aspen

Isoprene emissions importantly protect plants from heat stress, but the emissions become inhibited by instantaneous increase of [CO2], and it is currently unclear how isoprene-emitting plants cope with future more frequent and severe heat episodes under high [CO2]. Hybrid aspen (Populus tremula x Populus tremuloides) saplings grown under ambient [CO2] of 380 μmol mol(-1) and elevated [CO2] of 7...
